BODY IMAGE versus BODY ESTEEM
Most of us know what the term self-esteem refers to … how you feel about yourself, your worth and pride in your abilities, skills and successes. Your self esteem decides how confident and willing you are to try new things. If you don’t succeed you review, adjust and try again or move on. Regardless of the outcome, your positive attitude and social graces allow you to enjoy and live life well.
We can link Body Esteem with your Self Esteem, yet sometimes we mistakenly associate Body Image with this instead.
Body Esteem refers to how you feel about your body; how you care for your body and the pride you take in your body’s abilities regardless of appearance or image.
Body Image is a mental image of your body and how you believe it appears to others. We refer to the most prevailing body type, ectomorphic or “thin body” to compare how and if we measure up. Unfortunately our society glorifies this “perfect” body and it is difficult to be positive if you believe you are any different.
To nurture positive Body Esteem we can stop comparing ourselves with others and emphasize your good attributes instead. We can start thinking about what we like about our body’s abilities versus its appearance.
Some ways to alter our body image are:
• Create criteria for self esteem beyond appearance
• Appreciate your current body
• Practice healthy behaviors that makes you feel good
• Reduce your exposure to negative images
• Exercise for fitness, health and well-being
• Get out of abusive, negative relationships
• Change negative thoughts
• Control what you can
Remember, your body is unique, beautiful and deserves to be appreciated.
Enjoy it, embrace it and love it!
