I am wanting to put on some muscle mass and I think I've been doing too much cardio. Is it true that too much cardio can actually cause your body to burn its own muscle tissue? Its so hard to try to back down a bit on cardio b/c over the years I've become addicted to it, as well as my 3 days a week of weights. Also, should HIIT workouts be of a shorter duration and not 45 minutes? Thanks so much!
Hey... That is a good question. I am addicted to cardio too because if I don't end up in a pile of sweat gasping for air, I don't feel like I worked hard enough... I try to do weights 3 times a week also or on an every other day basis. I don't thinrk cardio will burn through it's muscle unless you have absolutely NO body fat left to go through, but I'm not sure. I'll be interested to see what Jari says here.
I recommend doing HIIT workouts for 20-30 minutes max. If you are working at lower intensities, those sessions can be longer. If you aren't eating enough for the amount you are working out then your body will start to use protein as fuel meaning you will be burning muscle mass. You need to make sure you are taking in enough calories so that you don't burn your muscle!
HI Jari
How do you know how many calories to have? I really think that has been my problem, I just don't know how many calories I should have. I workout aleast 5 days aweek sometimes 6 for about an hour. I am feeling tired alot.
Can you give me an idea. Thanks
