What is recommended as a good post-workout meal? I can't find a protein powder that I like, as i'm a very picky eater, and can't get past the aftertaste. So, I can't do a protein shake. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Crystal

Hi Crystal,

I have to say that I love my protein shakes (I use Herbalife products), but usually I am ravenous after a good workout. My favorite post-workout meal is this: 1 red or orange bell pepper or a bunch of broccoli, about 3 ounces of chicken (equivalent to the size of my palm, essentially) that I cut up and cook up in a wok pan with a little olive oil, Italian seasoning and some added red pepper flakes. Then I put this over 1/3 cup of pasta - I use small pasta that I can measure in a cup before cooking it. I find that it replenishes my energy through lots of veggies and enough protein to help my post workout recovery but not too many carb calories to undo my workout efforts.

HI Mary,

Thanks for the reply. The recipe sounds delicious; I will have to try that. I wish that I could find a protein shake that I like. I guess one day I will find one. :) Thanks again!

You're welcome. I know all about trial and error finding protein snacks/bars and powders that work with my tastebuds. Some are just an acquired taste but I just kept trying different things until I found Herbalife. You'll find one that works for you.

Have a great day!

Hey Crystal,

I am picky about protein powders too, but there are a lot of great options out there. I love BSN Lean Dessert protein powders. They taste absolutely delicious. Another favorite of mine are Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey protein powders. They are good too and easy to mix, which is an added bonus!

I stay away from protein bars. I can addicted to those things and eat them like as if they are candy bars, so I just don't buy any at all. But, if you're keen on buying them, I would suggest trying the Zone bars. they are good and Luna and Balance bars are great too. Just watch the calories on those things cos they can be very high.

Hope this was of help,

Sadia

Hi Sadia,

Thanks for the information, and yes, it is helpful. I will have to checkout the BSN protein powder. I tried a chocolate protein powder and it was good; however, I could not get past the after taste! So, I check this brand out. I have never tried protein bars, so that may be an option as well.

Thanks again!

Hi Crystal,

I use Labrada Pro V 60 protein powder in the vanilla ice cream flavor mixed with some skim milk. My post-workout meal is breakfast, so I usually have Grape Nuts with skim milk and mixed berries and fat free yogurt.

Another good protein shake is the myoplex lite from BFL...love them! I add frozen blueberries and half a banana with skim milk....yummy!

Post workout I wouldn't be worried about protein as much as I would be about carbohydrates. Try to eat something with a mix of protein as well as carbohydrates. Try a glass of milk and some fruit. You might want to try mixing protein powder in yogurt. You can't even tell that its in there and its a good way to get protein and dairy.
I haven't tried it but I know that you can buy unflavored protein powder. Might be worth a shot considering protein powder is such a handy way to meet your protein requirements.

I like the Jay Robb protein powders.. they are delicious! My newest obsession is either a scoop of protein powder mixed with 1 tbsp water and 1 tbsp peanut butter, or 2/3 cup Fage 0% yogurt mixed with a scoop of protein powder. The peanut butter one turns into a texture like cookie dough, and the yogurt mixture tastes like ice cream!

Crystal....I use a drink called the Recovery formula and it tastes scrumptous its an orange creamy taste no protein flavor at. Here is what it does for you: • Helps you refuel, re-energize, and reduce muscle soreness • Contains the accepted ratio of four parts carbohydrates to one part protein to support speedy and complete recovery • Simple and complex carbohydrates to support optimum blood sugar and glycogen replenishment • A high Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) protein blend to provide critical amino acid building blocks for rapid muscle repair and growth • Vitamins, including antioxidants, which assist in tissue repair and growth. If your interested you can email me kristijean@charter.net and I can send you some more info. or you can check out www.shakeology.com which is another great tasting one. Either way I can let you know how to get them.

Boy have I got the protein powder for you. No taste! It's by Olympian Labs and it's a pea protein powder. I love the texture it provides to shakes, but I can't taste it at all.

I also use the BSN Syntha 6 in chocolate for an after workout "shake". I use the pea in a before workout smoothie.
