My knee is bothering me. When I do squats it makes weird noises and now it is hurting.

My hamstring seems to pull when I try to stretch too.

I don't want to stop exercising but I'm not sure if complete rest is required or not.

How long is a reasonable amount of time to have it hurting before it would require having a doctor look at it? Toughing it out for a while to see what it does would be my preference.

I really HATE going to the doctor and would rather wait and see.

It isn't extremely painful and it didn't just start suddenly like I pulled something.

Is this what OLD feels like? haha

thanks,

Lori

I've had similar weird creaking sounds from my knee but no pain. However something is seriously wrong with the ball of my left foot. It hurts so bad - the more pressure and weight I put on it the worse it hurts. I've been advised to lay off working out but I just can't do that. Working out is too important to me

Hi ladies,

I couldn't resist but to jump in here because of my experience with a bummed knee.

Sometimes, knees do make funny sounds, but it may have to do more with being consistent with stretching. I've torn the anterior cruciate ligament on my right knee and I think that left knee may have a small meniscus tear. I've had surgery and recovered from that. The thing that most physiotherapists and orthropedic surgeons would say is to strengthen your legs with different exercises. If you can hit each angle of the leg with three different exercises, then that would be optimal. I've been told that most people have underdeveloped hamstring strength compared to the quads due to
everyday frontal and linear movements. After my first injury, ( and I've had 3), I was on the elliptical machine a lot so that I could work on the backward movements to help with hamstring strength.

I think that resting your knee, if it hurts, for 7 days may be good. If it still bugs you, then you should go to see the doc.

Nancy, I think that you have plantar fascitis. There's pain every time you take a step? As a nurse, I've also had this problem. Hate to say it, but you may need to rest it. Also, you could try taking a tennis ball, wet it, and then put it into the freezer. When it's really cold, put in a sock and roll your heel over it. This may take some of the pain and swelling away along with some Ibuprofen. Also, after using the tennis ball, pick up the sock with your toes so that you strengthen your foot muscles.

Just some suggestions,

Zerlina

I am actually bad for not stretching enough. I was wondering if my hamstring is actually too tight rather than not strong enough.
I seem to have quite a bit of strength on the backside of my legs and not so much in the quads.
Guess I will try to be better about stretching and see if this helps.
Thanks for the advice!

Lori,

I would not wait to see a doctor if I were you.

I had knee pains (noticed it doing karate) for 2 years and thought like you that if it's not terribly painful, I'd just tough it out. When it got to the point where it was painful to even walk up and down stairs I decided it was time to see a doctor. Turns out the cartilage under my patella is worn and I'm now waiting to have surgery.

If you see a doctor now, you can find out what the problem is and you may just need physiotherapy and strengthening exercises.

If it was my situation, I'd try exercises with low impact in my knees but I definitely would visit the doctor right away, because there is obviously something wrong and we never know if it is some serious damage there (from what I have read knees are a sensitive area), it's your call.

You might want to see a sports medicine doctor.

When I tore my ACL, I first went to see my family doctor who agreed it was injured (obviously, it was really swollen), but only suggested ice and rest. I wasnt' satisfied, so I saw a sports med doctor who diagnosed the problem in minutes, gave recommendations for immediate treatment (ice and rest) and sent me off to physio. I later needed surgery and more rehab, but despite the set-back, I'm back to exercising.

Your knee problem might take months, as mine did, to heal. But a few months off certain strenous exercises is only for short term and it is well worth it to take proper care of an injury and have healthy knees in the long term. A good doctor and physiotherapist will tell you what exercises and effort you can do during healing and what activities you should/not do after. Take care of your knees and hopefully you'll avoid life-long problems.

I am beginning to wonder if it is something hereditary. My Mom had to have knee surgery and then eventually had to have knee replacement.
Our son is prone to joint problems. (knees, shoulders, ankles)
I also have weak shoulders and hurt the one and it took over a year to feel better but I never did go to the doctor.
Get Ripped has actually improved the strength in my shoulders a lot and it never bothers me anymore!

Guess I really should go see about my knee. (yuck) I usually don't get taken seriously about stuff because I don't go in whining like a baby so Doctors seem to think it must not be bad and send me away.
I just dread the thought of THAT happening!
Thanks everyone for all the imput.
