I just found out that I have high cholesterol. I am 39 years old, I work out and I don't eat much red meat. I also count calories except on Saturday and Sunday. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. What are the foods for lowering cholesterol? Are protein shakes o.k. to have? I'm not good at cooking, so I was wondering if frozen meals like healthy choice or lean cuisine are okay to have? Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks

Hi Mary, I have a really great suggestion for you and would be happy to share with how it works for other people. Check it out at www.shakeology.com and then if your interested in finding out how you can get some email me kristijean@charter.net. It has alot of health benefits including lowering cholesterol, helping to reduce your weight and many more.

I checked out the web site. It sounds good but is it expensive?

Sorry for the delayed response. Its comparable to alot of the other shakes out there. You can check out the pricing at www.FunGettingFit.com, which is my website. Keep in mind that they consider this being compared to buying all your vegetables, and/or protein shakes etc for the month. Its a combination of those things. Did you read about it and watch the info video?

Hi Mary

A good way to figure out if something has cholesterol in it is to figure out whether it is an animal product or not. If a food is not from an animal source, it does NOT have cholesterol. Therefore, things like butter etc are hidden ways in which you consume cholesterol, without really realizing it.

Also, a large amount of the cholesterol generated by your body is based on your genetics. Only somewhere in the range of 20% of your total cholesterol can be controlled by what you consume. As you likely already know, there is good cholesterol also, called HDL. If your HDL is high (which is a good thing), that will contribute to and overall higher reading of your total cholesterol.

Another point of note, is that Saturated fat is also a contributor to cholesterol. That being said, indirectly when you consume sat. fats, you are increasing your cholesterol.

Hope that helps :)

PS- I also had high cholesterol (and don't eat red meats or fatty foods), and found that eating oatmeal or oatbran cereal every morning for a few months brought it down.

Thanks for the help. I didn't know that a big part of cholesterol is genetic. That makes sense why mine is so high and I don't eat that much red meat. Thank you so much.

Check out the book "Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. His website is drfuhrman.com. The truth is that a low fat, vegan diet is so helpful for this, but done the right way..Dr. Furhmans book is really exceptional. He is an M.D. and treats all his patients with "Nutritional excellence," as he calls it. I follow his guidelines pretty well, most of the time, and have gotten awesome results from it. Peace!
