Hi Jari!

I need your help!  I have been very dedicated to my workouts, trying to eat clean as much as possible (sometimes when my husband & I get invites to our friends houses, I don't have a lot of control over what I get to eat, but I try to keep my portion sizes in check nonetheless), have really made an effort to cut back on booze, drink a gallon of water a day, and I dropped a few pounds and have been delighted.  I weighed between 123-127 most of the time.  I weighed this morning and I was back to 130!  What the heck happened and how could I gain that much weight from Friday (I weighed 125) to Tuesday morning (I weighed 130)?  I do weigh myself almost everyday and just don't understand what in the world has happened.  I did weights and cardio on Friday, an intense cardio session on Saturday, a boxing workout Sunday, and weights and cardio on Monday, so it wasn't like I was slacking off and sitting around with a huge bag of candy and chips all weekend.  I'm just so frustrated because it took me a few months to finally get my weight under 130 and its back to where i started from in just a matter of days.  HELP!

Hi Amanda,

It's likely just water :) Don't fret! Sodium also makes us retain fluid and that will show up on the scale. If you are eating clean then there's really no way you can gain a solid 3 pounds in that little amount of time. Remember, it takes 3500 extra calories to gain a pound. 5 pounds is therefore an extra 17,500 calories.... do you think you really ate that much and burnt off zero? I doubt it :)

Daily weigh ins can be very frustrating! If you are to weigh yourself daily make sure it is first thing in the morning before any food or drink in your under clothes so you can get a more accurate reading. You'll be back down in no time. I'm sure it is just water weight like Jari said!

You can also gain a few pounds during the period or if you are constipated. The weight also fluctuates throughout the day unless you weigh yourself first thing in the morning after using the bathroom. I wouldn't worry about it.

This is exactly why I don't even bother weighing myself. There are so many factors that can contribute to weight flucuation... like mentioned already... your menstrual cycle, your digestive regularity, water weight from sodium, muscle weighing more than fat, etc..

As long as my clothes still fit, I'm happy. If you start to feel clothes you've been wearing comfortably getting tight, then that's when I would start to worry. But sometimes you can't go by blue jeans because they tend to shrink a little in the dryer.

Another great thing I did once was have a personal trainer measure me to see what percentage of body fat I was at before I started really committing to working out, and then they can do it again later and you can see how much you have changed. This was awhile ago, but he used this tool to pinch me in a few different places, and then they use that measurement of how much skin they could pinch to determine your percentage. For me, although I actually went from about 107 to 115, I look much better/healthier. I am solid and actually have a body now and I am at a lower percentage of body fat.

Good luck to you. Don't fret. You sound like you're at a good weight!

Thanks guys and Jari!

I know there was no possible way I could have consumed an extra 17,500 calories, even with having dessert on Valentine's night! I would really like to get a bodyfat analysis, the only place I can think of that would do one would be the YMCA by my house. The last one I had was my freshman year in college in 1995. I was 19, weighed 119 and my body fat was 19%. I'd be interested to see how its changed since then, especially because back then I was only running for exercise, no weights, not eating a very good, clean diet, drinking far less water than I do now, and not really changing up my routine to shock my muscles. So, if I"m able to get it done, I'll post my findings! Thanks again y'all!

Amanda
